Kuala Lumpur Photography Festival 2008

The annual Kuala Lumpur Photography Festival (KLPF) is back. Same as last year, it is held at Berjaya Times Square on 18 & 19 Oct 2008. KLPF is the Malaysia version of Photokina where manufacturers will be there to showcase their latest photography gear and retailers will be there having some 'sales'.

PhotoMalaysia.com is having a booth there this year and they have actually opened to their forumers a chance to showcase some of the forumers' photos. I thought of giving it a shot at the last minute and submitted some photos. Was a little bit surprise that one of my photo make it to the submission and will be at PM.com booth. Look out for the below photo at PM.com booth :)

How to clean fungus inside a lens

Fungus can grow inside a lens if it has moisture being left there for a long time. However, fungus can easily be killed if they got expose to sunlight. That said, you should use your lens regularly (every week) and rest assure you shouldn't have fungus. Shoot an object a day, keep the fungus away ! hahaha

Unluckily, one of the lens my brother own has fungus in it and I have decided to give it a try to remove it.

I shall warn you DO NOT FOLLOW WHAT I WILL SHOW YOU BELOW. DO NOT ! DO IT AT YOUR OWN RISK !

The problem.
This is how fungus looks like on my brother's Konica Minolta 75-300mm f4.5-5.6

Back to basic in Photography - Shutter speed

Something i read sometime ago which is very useful for people who just got into photography. The one most common question is why my shots are blur? wat shutter speed to use?

It's pretty simple, basic rules is 1/x shutter speed, in which x = focal length.

Example:

u using a 18-55mm lens, when shooting at 55mm you will need 1/55 s. However, due to the crop factor in digital body, we need to multiply with the crop factor. so instead of 1/55 s it becomes 1/88 s which is around 1/80s.

A simple chart for you all

Focal Length (mm) Effective Focal length  (mm) Shutter  (s)
 18  28.8  1/30
 24  38.4  1/40
 28  44.8  1/50
 50  80  1/80
 55  88  1/80
 70  112  1/120
 90  144  1/160
 100  160  1/160
 200  320  1/320
 300  480  1/500

Smoke

This is the 3rd time i try to capture smoke, and I think is the most successful one.

#1 - Original before colouring with Photoshop

#2

#3 - Trying something new, a white background, turn out to be quite nice

Some of the equipments required:

  1. Camera
  2. Tripod
  3. Dark Background (in this case i use my diffuser)
  4. External Flash
  5. Jos Stick

This is how the setup look like

The thing you need to becareful is airflow, too much airflow will cause the smoke to be very weak, and too little airflow will make the smoke looks boring, not much movement.

Lowyat.Net Photo Outing

Organised the 3rd LYN outing for photoshoot. First was at Zoo, second bird park, 3rd model shooting. It was a great outing as everyone like the model (phew). Models were great, the photographers were very co-operative. Photogs were changing and trying out other gear like crazy. I tried out the 85mm f1.2L. Superb lens ! Below are some photos from the outing.
